This article by Muğla News Agency reports on Menteşe Councils decision to demolish the buildings, which were built after 2019 and were therefore not covered by the planning amnesty ( Imar Barışı).

The results are pretty drastic, especially for the owners.

There are thousands of illegal rental villas built in the last few years in our region. It is hard to imagine that Kaş Municipality will take a such tough measures. That’s why it’s even more important to ensure that the problem doesn’t get worse.

Do Not Build Illegal Buildings in Muğla

A million-dollar illegally built villa has been razed to the ground.

In the Menteşe district of Muğla, the demolition of illegal residences and workplaces, which were built after the Planning Amnesty (Imar Barışı) finished at the end of 2019, continues. The demolitions started by Menteşe Municipality in Akbük Bay is continuing in the neighbourhoods close to the sea.

A rental villa with a pool was demolished in Menteşe’s Kuyucak District, in Obrukalan, in the upper part of Gökova Bay. Whilst the Menteşe District Gendarmerie Command teams ensured environmental safety, the demolition was carried out by the Menteşe Municipality Science Affairs Directorate teams.

Following the decision to demolish the villa and its pool, which had been built for the rental market, the items inside the villa, which was situated in the upper part of Ula Akyaka Neighborhood, were removed before the demolition., After the doors and windows had been dismantled and the white goods in it moved, the demolition of the luxury villa was completed in about half an hour.

Menteşe Council decided to demolish the residences and workplaces, determined to have been made after December 31, 2019, the last day of the Planning Amnesty. They have added that the demolition by the teams is an ongoing effort and that  the fight against illegal construction would continue without letup.

  1. What do they do with the land though? Do they replant trees etc or just leave it. Either way I guess it will all look not very pretty for quite a while. Is it a joined up plan in respect of what they do to the land once demolished?

    1. I do not know honestly. I presume the land owner will be required to reinstate it but I am not sure. Given the huge scale here and given that of 11 current orders only two have been carried out, I imagine everybody feels confident that they can build without fear of demolition anyway.

  2. That does not like a $1M villa, will they remove the concrete foundations and back fill with soil?
    Hope it’s not a token gesture to grab headlines!

    1. In this area it is not a token gesture. It is an expensive area near the highly protected Akyaka region. I do not know how the reultant spoil is dealt with
