The Kaş Area

Please enjoy the selection of images from the Kaş region.

The main regional centres are the coastal resort towns of Kaş and Kalkan. It has too a magnificent coastline dotted with islands, the most significant of which is the Greek island of Meis 6km out from Kaş. Rising up from the coast are the Taurus mountains. Their slopes are populated with historic villages such as Islamlar, Üzümlü, Bezirgan, Gökseki and others.

Until recently these settlements subsisted from agriculture, mainly based on the olives and grapes harvests. In the last decade tourism has taken over. In particular a rash of unlicensed building has driven out much of the small scale farming and seen a rash of concrete ‘luxury’ villas, with pools and curtaining to provide privacy for the mainly conservative guests from different parts of Turkey.

The recent pandemic and a planning amnesty which finished early 2018 has seen a massive and unwelcome uplift in this uncontrolled and illegal development, bringing many problems in its wake.
